Encountering the World of Islam

Encountering the World of Islam guides you on a journey into the lives of Muslims around the world, and in your neighborhood.

Come join us and listen to experienced Christian and Muslim experts in Encountering the World of Islam, a semester-long course patterned after Perspectives on the World Christian Movement. This is an exciting course that seeks to mobilize and educate Christians to understand and befriend Muslims through readings, field trips, and interactions with peoples from the Muslim world. We will leave the class with a working knowledge of the Islamic faith and an understanding of how to appropriately share our faith in Christ with our Muslim friends.

“As our class draws to a close, I find I have many answers about Islam, but I also have many questions. I'm excited (and nervous) about ministering to my new Muslim contact. As I've read the Sunday editions of the New York Times the last two weekends, I've been amazed at how many of its articles have to do with Islam. This is definitely a hot topic, and I only wish that more churches and Christians would invest the 12 weeks to study it in depth as we have. Mere knowledge doesn't always solve problems, but I think it is necessary to learn about Islam first before jumping into any witnessing or cross-cultural ministry situations. Learning also strips away many of our prejudices, misconceptions, and stereotypes.”– Andrew

“I've so thoroughly enjoyed all the reading, the lecturers and the journaling that I'm sad that EWI is ending. It's been great hearing from the other students what they are thinking and experiencing. Speakers have inspired me to continue to study the bible with the heart to learn how God would have me share with Muslims and also to study the Qur'an. That bridge is real when you can cross it. . . . I truly pray that I might be used by Christ to bring a Muslim into the Kingdom.” - Allison

“This class has provided me with a greater understanding of Islam, its history, its practices and the people who follow it. It has dispelled many myths and misconceptions that I had about the beliefs and the practice of Islam and the people. I highly recommend this class to everyone; not just to people with a heart for missions but all committed Christians. However, I would require the Perspectives on World Missions course as a pre-requisite for this class.” - Ray

“This class has been wonderful. I feel like I know so much more about Islam and am much more equipped to talk to Muslims and begin relationships with them. At the same time I'm also so humbled. Seems like the more I know, the more I realize how much I don't know! I guess this is why they say we have to be life-long learners. I hope to be able to keep it up even once outside of the structure of the class. I think the best part of the class is the emphasis on personal application. The journals forced me to actually think and personally react to the different readings and speakers, not to mention being challenged by all of the other students and how they were being affected by the information. Engaging in actual relationship with Muslims was the critical piece. The rubber hits the road there and I've really enjoyed my conversations with them and am looking forward to see how the relationships will grow and continue in the future.” – Julia

I want to let you know that the class was a valuable tool and a blessing. I had always been drawn towards Christian apologetics and this class was a first step of many lessons on how to give a defense of the Gospel. - Alejandro

"Through the class I've learned that the messenger is just as important as the message and that I can't win anyone to the Lord if I don't show love first."
